The Remnants season began in pleasant conditions with a match against St Barnabas Church, a side we last played in 2021 and last lost to in 2012. So it was easy to think this would be a chance to knock of the rust of winter with a comfortable victory.

That seemed likely during our time in the field, with Trishant Simlai (2/10) and James Cummins (1/9) both bowling well on Remnants debut and Hugh Myers (1/9) and Iqtedar Alam (1/21) also having success. We thus restricted the Barnies to 94/7 from their 16 (six-ball) overs.

Unfortunately, we then decided to make a game of it, as our top order of Sajid Mahmood (8 off 22 balls), Marcus Baker (4 off 9 balls) and Stephen Doel (20 off 26 balls) all struggled to score. At the half-way point we were just 26/2 off 8 overs, and we didn't hit our second boundary until the 11th over, when Matthew Doel hit his second ball for six before racing to 27* off 15 balls before having to retire. But such was our slow start that we were then left needing 24 runs from 16 balls, which new bats Hugh (8* off 5 balls) and Qaiser Ahmed (5* off 7 balls) couldn't manage in the now gloomy conditions.

Qaiser Ahmed, Pete Ames, James Cummins and Neil Grover watch the runs fail to pile up.
