Remnants vs. Cambridge St Giles

18:00, Tuesday, June 18, 2019
Fitzwilliam College

Match cancelled.

Report by Daniel Mortlock:

While it was annoying to be soaked by heavy rain on the ride back to Cambridge station, there was some compensation in the knowledge of a job well done: not only had we avoided a repeat of our first match thrashing by a strong St Giles side, but we didn't lose a wicket to their (and sometimes our) tear-away fast bowler Aatish Maharaj, and we didn't concede even a run to their (and sometimes our) classy openers Chris Badger and Pete Ames. Given that St Giles also had several other strong Senior League players in their side, and that we'd only managed two victories all summer, this really was an extraordinary achievement . . .

. . . or at least would have been, had any of the above happened on the field. Instead there was, as you've no doubt already worked out, no play at all, although the rain that eventually killed off the game didn't arrive until after most members of both teams had arrived at the ground. Indeed, at the nominal start time of 6pm the outfield was damp but clearly playable, and there was only the lightest of drizzle which, if it had stopped, would have allowed play as soon as the covers were wheeld off. The problem was that the weather forecast was not only bad, but correct - the drizzle got steadily heavier, and had turned into proper rain by the time the last of us had left the ground at 6:30pm.

All that was left for us to do was go home and hope that there's not a repeat for tomorrow's Remnants vs. Remnants game . . .
