Remnants vs. Fitzwilliam College

June 22, 2007
Fitzwilliam College

Match cancelled.

We were all set to go today until, at about 5pm, Dave Norman happened to find out that our opponents, Fitzwilliam College itself, weren't putting out a team and so we had that most annoying of phenomena: a perfectly good afternoon without any cricket.

One result of this frustration is that Geoff was once again motivated to put pen to paper (thus marking himself out from everyone else who puts finger to keyboard these days) and this is what he had to say on the matter:

Apologies to those who turned up at Fitz to find that the students ``couldn't raise a team''.

Whilst this might be understandable during a busy week of May Balls and the like, it was the students who initially proposed the fixture, and who fixed the date. Moreover this was done by informing Dave Norman they'd like to book the ground for a match vs. Remnants, rather than by informing us; nonetheless, the date was confirmed as soon we found out about it. I thus worked hard to put out a Remnants eleven for our year's one Friday fixture (never an easy thing) and Dave prepared the wicket, all while the opposition were struggling to, and then gave up on, raising a team. Despite the fact that they'd considered the game to be off a fortnight ago, I didn't hear that the game had been cancelled until after 6pm, by which time it was impossible to stop anyone from travelling to the ground, which most of us did, all to no avail.

In short: a student cock-up.

But cheer up: they'll be running the country in twenty years, and then it'll only be the destiny of your pension, rather than your precious Friday afternoon, that's in their hands.
